The Shard

The skyline of London has been redrawn by this building. It has awoken the enthusiasm for European architectural innovation.”
Nengjun Luo, CTBUH 2013 Awards Juror, CITIC Heye Investment

This week I want to take you far from american buildings I wrote about in past two weeks. Actually around 7 hours by plane and 5900 km from the white house. I am talking of course about the incredible and beautiful Shard, the skyscraper standing in London. It is as high as 306 metres and it is in fact the tallest building in the UK, 4th in the Europe and 96th in the entire world. Even though it isn't the tallest or the biggest it is very unique with its design. Unlike no other building it's made to look like a shard of glass what makes it very futuristic and impressive. It owns this to a man named Renzo Piano who was the design architect working to create its unusual form and shape. It is located in the super modern part of London. The construction ended in July 2012 but It was officially opened in 2013. The iconic tower has redefined the London skyline and is already an international symbol for London.
The shard has total of 95 floors with 72 floors habitable and The total floor space of 11 hectares. The area of the glass façade that covers whole exterior of the building is 56,000 sq metres, which is as much as eight football pitches. Now after I talked about some of the technical aspects of it I want to present to you some of the cool features that may interest you. First of all it has 44 lifts which is really mind blowing. Another and yet incredible thing is the fact that over 90% of the materials used are recycled. It houses a few restaurants and a luxurious hotel and spa. Of course it has the viewing platform which actually occupies three floors(68, 69 and 72). If you want to appreciate a view of London from high above the ground it's the best place to go. I personally saw this building while being in London and I have to say it was the most magnificent building I have ever seen In my entire life. I strongly recommend taking time and visiting it if you're in London.

  1. Now that the building is finished, what is there inside? Offices? Not flats, I'd imagine.
I vaguely remember there were some problems during the construction of the Shard - didn't the construction stop for some time?

  2. You wrote that there are 44 lifts. Is there any that goes from the 1 to the last floor? And if not do you know what is the lo gest one?

    1. I think there is at least one lift that goes from the bottom to the top because it would be very uncomfortable for you to change the lift every time you go from the botom to the top and back.

Reflection #3

Sports have been with us pretty much since the begining of our civilization but now became bigger than ever before. Nowdays we can watch a game of football for example that is being played tousands of kilometers away. That's amazing  because we are able to expirience sports like never until now and that's cool. But to me what is cooler is the phenomenon of cheering for sombody or some team. I think it is special because we don't know those people in person, we don't know who they really are like but still, we take time out of our day to spend it watching them compete with others. This is in my opinion the true magic of sports. Not the competition or the fact that you can win something etc. But the fact that it truly unites people from all countries, parts of the globe, from different cultures and religions. It just doesn't have any boundaries and that is what makes it so magical and special.

Does art have to be beautiful?

Does art have to be beautiful? In my opinion it doesn't. I think that some works of art just can not be beautiful. For example there are some incredible movies that are considered art but can't be beautiful because you can't really call a movie about some hard topics like war or murder beautiful. Another thing is that some pieces of art aren't made to look nice but for example to make people think about something or show them how our world changes. This is why In my opinion art doesn't always have to be beautiful.

How Ice might help us Find Extraterrestrial Life

The video I decided to watch is about looking for alien life in our solar system. The things we look for however are rather strange. Here on earth ice usually means no life but on some moons it could possibly cover huge underground oceans. If that's true and on Europa or Enceladus we'll find liquid water which is one of the most important conditions for life to exist we will be very close to finding out if there is life outside our home planet. We've been unlucky in finding any extraterrestrial  life as of today. If you heat water to 100 degrees celsius it will start turning into vapor . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGsPetwqa_o
